Legend has it that King Alfonso I the Catholic built this building on February 21, 746 and the excavations that were carried out at the beginning of the restoration work confirm this theory. The current monastery was founded in this place and directed by the Order of San Benito until the confiscation of 1835. Two rooms with archaeological remains, especially ceramics, which were found during the restoration, make up the legacy of this distant past. The center of the city of Cangas de Onis is approximately 1.5 km away, while the airport of Oviedo-Aviles is 95 km away. The monastery was declared a National Monument in 1907 and has an enlarged wing, which blends in harmony with the architectural style: a jewel on the green shore of the Sella River, whose waters reflect the building. In the background, guests can admire the majestic landscape of the Picos de Europa.
